websitebuilder • August 18, 2022

The Cane Corso and Presa Canario dog breeds are big, bulky, mean, affectionate, and playful mutts – all rolled into one.

These are mastiff dogs that are protective by nature. They were both used to guard livestock and the home.

To date, they love nothing more than protecting those they love. Sure, they can have independent streaks and obedience challenges but if you understand them well, they make incredible doggies.

Are you thinking about getting a Cane Corso Presa Canario mix? These breeds bring a lot to the table. They are sweet giants with an even temperament, loyalty, and affection.

Now imagine getting a mix of both of them? You will have yourself a terrific pet to call your own.

But like many dogs, he has challenges of his own. Before you adopt or buy one, you should know what is in store for you.

Today’s guide exposes what’s like to own this beautiful mix.

1. Looks

To start us off, let’s look at what to expect with your mix when it comes to physique.

Right off the bat, you can tell that this is a big doggie. He is a guardian and a mastiff. Dogs that meet these descriptions aren’t small and weak.

Cane Corsos typically weigh anywhere from 90-110 pounds and stand at a height of 25-27.5 inches.

Presa Canarios, on the other hand, weigh 83-130 pounds and stand at a height of 22-26 inches.

Both breeds look alike in so many ways. However, the Presa is slightly bigger than the Cane Corso.

The mix falls somewhere in these weight and height ranges. Basically, this is a muscular, agile, and big pooch.

His head is large and muscular or short and wide and his body thick and broad.

Their ears are short and sometimes cropped to make him an excellent guardian like his parents.

He has a short smooth coat with a single color on it. Possible colors include fawn, brindle, black, and grey.

2. Temperament

If you are looking for a perfect companion whose loyalty only lies with you, you’ve come to the right place.

Parent breeds are master bodyguards. They will do anything for the family. After guarding sheep and people for centuries, they have perfected the art.

Your mix will love you to the end, always wanting to spend time with you and the rest of the family.

He is aloof with strangers though so take note of that. He may attack if he feels the need to but he can also stay with you while barking at the stranger to alert you.

This is an intelligent dog with one mission in life: to please his owner.

Give him some work to do. Train him constantly. He loves being active and busy. Just ensure you are a strong pack leader and your doggie will hang on to you.

With good training and early socialization, this mutt will become friendly and peaceful around kids and other pets.

3. Training

The Cane Corso Presa Canario is a confident, intelligent, and strong-willed doggie.

Although great, these qualities can make training a nightmare. Your mix will desire to be the alpha. Without you being firm, consistent, and strong, training will go south.

Add that to his high prey drive and you know you are up for a challenge.

If he sees something that interests him during training, he will run after it.

To be safe, make the sessions short and sweet. Utilize positive reinforcement as much as you can.

Thankfully, he is a quick learner. You will not need to repeat instructions a lot.

4. Grooming

Grooming a Cane Corso Presa Canario mix is pretty easy. For one, his coat is short and doesn’t shed much.

He may lose some fur from time to time but you will not find it overwhelming.

Keep a vacuum at hand and use it to get rid of any loose fur and you’ll be good.

The dog also needs weekly brushing to keep his coat shiny and neat.

A soft bristle brush does a great job. Occasionally, use a pin brush to massage his skin and get the blood flowing well.

Bathing is necessary but not frequent. Once every two or three months will do the trick.

Be sure to use a mild shampoo especially if your dog has sensitive skin.

5. Exercise

Any muscular and energetic dog needs plenty of exercises to be happy and healthy. Our mix isn’t any different. He needs all kinds of activities during the day to burn off the excess energy.

A 30-minutes high-intensity activity daily is a great place to start. More is better.

Also, plan to take the dog on hikes during the weekends as long as you’ve trained him not to cause havoc out there.

Additionally, he needs things like rope pulling and swimming are ideal for this doggie.

At home, keep him busy with mental stimulation toys to engage his brain. Teach him simple tasks at home as well.

6. Is The Mix Aggressive?

The Cane Corso and Presa Canario have a bad reputation for being aggressive.

They are guardian dogs meaning they are bred to attack if necessary.

Presa Canarios were also involved in dogfighting. They would fight to the death just to see another day.

An untrained mix of both dogs is bound to be aggressive. Fortunately, good training and socialization will control aggression to a greater extent.

7. Health

Is a Cane Corso Presa Canario mix healthy or not? Well, the answer is that he is. He enjoys a long lifespan of about 12 years of no issues at all.

However, with a large body, he is predisposed to Hip and Elbow Dysplasia. This is a joint issue that causes mobility problems and triggers arthritis.

His big size also puts him up at a higher risk for Gastric Torsion. This is where the stomach fills up with gas after eating and twists when the air is in excess. This can become fatal fast.

Other medical conditions to keep note of include Panosteitis (growing pains), Cardiomyopathy, and Osteochondritisdissecans.

If you anything amiss, talk to your vet.

Closing Thoughts

Affectionate, intelligent, intimidating, and strong, the Cane Corso Presa Canario mix is a wonderful dog to have for the right owner.

The biggest challenge is training him to suppress his aggression, high prey drive, and stubbornness.

If you can nail that, this lovable dog will make a great pet at home.
